Flag Retirement Ceremony

Retiring worn flags with the dignity they deserve.

When an American flag becomes worn, faded, or torn beyond repair, it should be retired with respect — not thrown away. The American Legion has long carried the honor of conducting dignified flag retirement ceremonies.

How to Retire a Flag

  • Drop worn flags off at Post 200 for proper retirement
  • Flags are retired in a respectful ceremony, traditionally by burning
  • We hold retirement ceremonies, often around Flag Day in June
  • Schools and scouts are welcome to take part or observe
